  • Canon 5D3 seen in the wild?

Looks like a man on safari in Kenya spotted a Canon tester using the new EOS 5D3

Certainly looks a likely candidate - it has the 5 series form factor:

    No built-in flash
    Control dial top left
Add-on grip rather than built-in like the 1 series

All logos were taped up, so it was definitely in stealth mode.

My guess is a Photokina release in 2012 - but with the Olympics this year, it could possibly be earlier to catch that wave.

      Looks good

Does the screen look slightly wider than other models ?

Could be a 7D replacement without a flash but most likely 5D as no flash on a 'budget' model might not be popular.

It might be announced at focus on imaging in March which is plenty of time before the Olympics.
      FOCUS ON IMAGING 2012

Photokina is nearly winter again which is a long time away.

I was hoping for a swivel screen as it's really useful for video on my 60D.

im not sure we will see swivel screens on higher end gear, they are not pro use safe, to much to snap off!
also there are a few accessory screens for the 5d i believe
that would no doubt be the same deal here!

Does look kind of widescreen doesn't it.

when you look at the current line-up, no full frame camera in the Canon range has a pop-up flash, only crop models - so this again points to it being a FF camera.

The same tester had the new 1DX with him as well, so it makes sense that the 5D3 would be released around the same time - i.e. pre Olympics.

That lens is the new 600 - very nice

Interesting joystick on the lower back area as well - would be in the correct position for vertical grip use?

Did you notice the other new lens he was trying out? The new Canon 200-400mm with built-in teleconverter.
APERTURE ACADEMY - Fine Art Photography Gallery, Digital Photography Workshops: Canon 200-400mm and 600mm prototype lenses first sightings...and the new 5D Mark III?

That'll be one for a lottery win though :-(

By rotating, cropping and lightening one of the photos you can see the photographer is Chimping at a photo of a Giraffe

I like the on screen legend that shows where abouts you are in the photo.

You can see it was a portrait shot and the head is near the top left of the photo.

Looks like the photographer was scrolling to the left with the joystick which is probably why the screen is dark if it was 'off' for a fraction of a second while the sutter was open for 1/200 on the camera that took this.

Yep - lovely looking lens with a built-in teleconverter - as you say, lottery money!
